Former Super Eagles attacker, Etim Esin has said he will take part in the Victor Ezeji Testimonial to give back to the people of Port Harcourt.

Esin, known as the African Maradona in his day played for Eagle Cement alongside Ezeji in the CAF Champions League in 1998 and has confirmed that he will be in Port Harcourt to honour his former team mate.

“I played with Victor in 1998 and he is one player I like so much because of how he carries himself.

“We need to honour people like Ezeji because of what he has done for the Nigerian League and if the little I can do for him is to be present at his testimonial match and play, then I will do it,” Esin said.

“Also, I played at Eagle Cement for just one season but it was a place I enjoyed and the fans were also good to me so it will be good for me to return there and play some football even though it will be just a novelty match

Etim Esin started his football career at amateur level in the mid-eighties with Oron United and then moved to Calabar Rovers and from there played for Flash Flamingoes and Iwuanyanwu Nationale

He was a member of the Flying Eagles team that played at the FIFA world youth Championships in 1987 before he moved on to Belgium to play for Lokeren where he made 70 appearances and scored 13 goals.

He moved to Lierse Sk playing 30 times and scoring 4 goals.

The draughts section of the Etche Sports Festival began on Monday, December 26 at the Okomoko Town Square.

Draughts, a new addition to the Festival which was previously all about football attracted a registration fee of two hundred naira which was later increased to five hundred because of the large turn out of entrants.

All preliminary games were played on Monday, December 26.

After the preliminary round matches, Paul Omdu, Mike Nwala, Uche Nwalevy and Naked Nwala qualified for the semifinals.

Dr. Uzoma Nwankwo, who alongside his friends and Associates put the Etche Sports Festival together told the media on Monday the idea of the draughts section was to get everybody involved.

“Everybody likes to play in and watch football tournaments, but not everybody can play in them.

“There are the elderly people who also want to be involved too and draughts is a chance for them to be involved.

“This is the first time we are organizing a draughts competition and I am happy with the turn out. Hopefully, it will be even much better next year,” Nwankwo said.

The semifinals, 3rd place match and final of the Draughts section will be played on January 1, 2017.

OFF THE COURT WITH QUEEN JOHN… Belema Alamina of Rivers Hoopers

Picture
I hope you had a great time reading my first piece on Kwara Falcons power forward, Femi Adekanye whose off the court lifestyle is quite an interesting one as a model and upcoming actor.

Still on what Nigeria basketball players do off the court especially during the off season, the second episode reveals another interesting personality.

In this episode, I will be chatting with another power forward who is the vice-captain of Rivers Hoopers Basketball club, Belema Alamina. Stick around………..

May I Know You?

My name is Belema Alamina, was born on 17th August, 1983. I am from Ogoloma in Okrika local government area of Rivers State. I attended Navy primary school, Borokiri, later went to Government Secondary School Borokiri (GSS), and graduated from River State University of Science Technology, UST as a Petroleum Engineer.
I am a professional basketball player for Rivers Hoopers Basketball club and a Petroleum Engineer with Kentgerman global limited located at 219 Trans Amadi Industrial Layout Port Harcourt. I have been working there since 2013 as a metering Technician.

What’s the nature of your job?

Metering Technician is all about measurement in oil and gas. I carry out recertification of prover loop system, meter proving and calibration of meters of all kinds, small volume prover system operator, instruments calibration ( pressure and temperature gauges), specialized in prover tanks and also documentation.

Was It Petroleum Engineering You Planned On Studying From The Beginning?

I wanted Geology or Petroleum Engineering and I got Petroleum. My dream was to go to University of Port Harcourt but I got UST.

Were you disappointed?

No, I was not; all I needed was to be admitted into a university.

How Did You Start Playing Basketball?

I started when I was in SS3 in 2002 with Coach Fubara Onyanabo at Baptist High School Churchill Road Borokiri. After school, I’ll go for practice by 4pm at the Baptist court.

You go to play rather than go home?

Nah… I get home, change and run to the court. Okay.

Who Introduced You To Basketball And To Coach Fubara?

While I was in secondary school, a classmate of mine called Olumide brought basketball to class and during lunch break he bounced the ball with his friends and that caught my interest. When I got home, I told a neighbour of mine called Soso Reuben Daka who no longer plays basketball. He introduced me to Coach Fubara and I am so happy for the contact I had with him.

Did Soso play for any recognized club or national sport festivals?

No he didn’t. He just played for pleasure and fitness.

How Were You Able To Marry Basketball And School?

Well I did my best to make sure both went smoothly. When it was time for my WAEC, I had to drop basketball for a while and concentrate on my exams.

When Did You Join Rivers Hoopers?

I joined the team in 2004. I was among the pioneers of the team when it was called Royal Hoopers which was founded by Syndoff  Ndom. But before then, I was going for basketball camps like Osita Camp in Enugu, Ejike Elite Camp in Kaduna, Ejike Camp in Bayelsa state, Hoopers Elite camp amongst others.

HOW Were Players Selected Into Royal Hoopers?

They hosted a competition called “Royal Clinics” which was announced on air at that time. I heard about it on radio and decided to go for the competition. Many young players attended the clinic and the organizers grouped us into 6 teams. About 30 players were selected at the end of the competition to form the team called Royal Hoopers. Although my team won the competition, I was also crowned the most valuable player of the tournament. We were just playing selected sides at that time and teams around the country till we officially joined the Nigeria basketball league in 2010. Many of players were dropped and new ones were recruited so we could compete favourably with other teams in the Atlantic conference. Ogoh Odaudu was also brought in to coach the team while Lamia Johnson and Johnson Orupabo who were among the pioneer coaches of the team were the two left to assist Odaudu.

Boxing: Samuel Peters knocked out in come back bout

21/12/2016

PictureSamuel Peters and Pulev at the weigh in
By Eric Baldwin

Former heavyweight world title challenger Kubrat Pulev (24-1, 13 KOs) defeated former WBC heavyweight title challenger Samuel Peter (36-5, 9 KOs) by a 4th round TKO to win the vacant WBA Inter-Continental heavyweight title on Saturday night in a mismatch in front of 15,000 BOXING fans at the Arena Armeec in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The fight was stopped after round three after the badly out of shape looking Peter appeared to hurt his right arm while throwing a wild shot. Peter bent over the ropes after the round ended. He appeared to be in pain and was leaning towards his right side, as if to show that he had hurt his right arm. Moments later, the fight was halted by the referee.

It’s just as well. The fight was a mismatch, as Peter was slow, fat and missing badly with every punch he threw. It was target practice for the 6’4 ½” Pulev, who jabbed Peter nonstop in rounds one through three. It was too easy for Pulev.

The Bulgarian heavyweight only rarely threw right hands in the fight, because he didn’t need to. Peter wasn’t able to block his jabs, so Pulev didn’t need to throw his right hands too often. On the occasions that Pulev would use his right, he would miss and get countered by Peter. Pulev’s ability to land right hand has always been a problem for him in his fights, but especially tonight. Pulev was coming up SHORT right his right and falling into Peter for a clinch.

Peter was able to land shots when he was being held by Pulev. The only time Peter had any real success in hitting Pulev was when the two of them were clinching. Peter would reach around and hit Pulev with a looping shot. Peter likely learned how to hit his opponents while being held from his two fights against former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko, who held him frequently in their two fights together. Peter lost both of them, but he learned how to hit while being held.

In the 1st round, Pulev set the pace of the fight by jabbing Peter frequently with head-snapping jabs as he waddled forward. Peter, 36, missed a number of wild left hooks and right hands in the round. Peter wasn’t letting himself get close enough before throwing his shots. Instead of using head movement to get close enough to hit the taller, leaner Pulev, Peter was throwing wild shots from the outside. Those punches had no hope of landing.

If Peter was lean, young and in top shape, he might have landed his punches from the outside, but not in the shape he was in tonight. Peter looked like he’d been training for the fight at the KITCHEN TABLE with a knife and fork rather than in the boxing gym. He was just way too fat. You’ve got to give Pulev’s promoters at Sauerland Events credit for selecting the out of shape Peter to fight tonight rather than someone that could potentially beat him like Luis Ortiz. You can argue that Pulev won the fight the moment the contract was signed for tonight’s fight, because Peter was too heavy to do anything inside the ring.

A more embarrassing 2nd round

The 2nd round was embarrassing, as Pulev landed jab after jab to the head of Peter without coming back at him. I counted 20 consecutive jabs thrown from Pulev in the round that hit Peter in the head before he finally answered back with a right hand. It was completely one-sided in the 2nd round. Pulev landed one right hand in the entire round, and that was in the last seconds before the bell. Pulev didn’t need to use his right, because Peter had no defense for the jabs he was getting hit with. After the round ended, Peter walked slowly back to his corner in a way that suggested that he was not motivated. Peter looked totally defeated. It would have been a good idea for the fight to have been stopped at that point in between rounds, because Peter was just getting HAMMERED by Pulev and not doing anything. I’m sure Peter wanted to make it competitive, but his poor conditioning and his bad flight strategy wasn’t going to lead to him winning the fight. I think a flabby heavyweight could beat Pulev if they fought with the right game plan by attacking him and getting close enough to land, but Peter wasn’t doing that tohnight.

Pulev landed everything but the kitchein sink on Peter in the 3rd round. It wasn’t until the last seconds of the round that Peter woke up and tried to attack Pulev with some meaningful punches. But to Peter’s bad luck, he appeared to injure his right arm as the round ended. The fight was then stopped in between rounds.

Samuel Peter looked very overweight for the fight. His midsection was that of someone who hadn’t trained enough. Peter didn’t look like an athlete tonight. He weighed in at 271lbs for Friday’s weigh-in, which is around 30 pounds over his best fighting weight. Peter definitely looked 30 pounds overweight. But even if Peter did come into the fight in TOP shape, he would have had problems getting to the taller Pulev, because he getting jabbed and picked off each time he would come forward to land anything. The only heavyweight that has done well against Pulev is the taller 6’6” Wladimir Klitschko, who used his left hook to drop him over and over again before stopping him in the 5th round in their fight in 2014. Incidentally, that was the only real quality heavyweight that Pulev has fought during his seven-year pro career. Most of Pulev’s other fights have come against weak heavyweights.

With the win, Pulev, IBF #2, WBC #3, WBO #10, WBA #11, stays in position for another world title shot against one of the champions in the division. Pulev’s promoters at Sauerland Events are hoping that he can get a title shot in 2017. However, Pulev may need to go the WBO route if he wants a shot next year at a title, because World BOXING Council champion Deontay Wilder has other plans for big fights. The same goes for IBF champion Anthony Joshua, who is facing Wladimir in early 2017, and then likely a unification match against Deontay later on in the year. It would be better for Pulev if he fights the winner of the Joseph Parker vs. Andy Ruiz Jr. fight for the WBO belt. He has a better chance of beating one of those guys than he would if he fought Joshua or Wilder for their titles.

Pulev looks he’s a good heavyweight, but I don’t think he can beat any of the TOP heavyweights in the division. With Pulev’s lack of punching power and his inability to land right hands, he would have no chance against heavyweights like Joshua, Wilder, Ruiz Jr., Ortiz and Parker. Those guys can all throw power shots, and they’re not going to be beaten by a heavyweight that only throws jabs like Pulev.

The 35-year-old Pulev doesn’t have the youth to find some power. At his age, Pulev is the finished product pretty much, and he’s not going to be able to suddenly develop the power he would need for him to beat the TOP heavyweights in the division. If Pulev’s management wants him to fight guys like Samuel Peter for the remainder of his career, I think he can win those fights every time, but I don’t see him being able to beat the top guys in the division without power and a right hand.

“Off The Court” with QUEEN JOHN... Meet Femi Adekanye, Kwara Falcons' power forward (Conclusion)

14/12/2016

Picture
This is the concluding part of Queen John’s Off The Court basketball moments with Femi Adekanye, who plays for Kwara Falcons

•        So are you passing a message across that you might not play in Nigeria next year?

*laughs* I am not sure yet but if I am around, I’ll love to play for Africa Basketball League, ABL. Last season I saw some of their clips and I love what I saw. I think it is more challenging though I am not saying the NBBF is not doing a good job.

•        You have an 8 or 9 Months break between seasons, what Do You Do During This Period? I Am Curious To Know What Basketball Players Do With Their Time During The Off Season

For me I do a lot of stuff and I think outside basketball I love photography and I love looking good which brings me to modelling,

For these past months, I have been doing more of modelling outside basketball. When I used to play for Mark Mentors, some group of people came up with an initiative called “Basketball Meets Fashion” BMF, influenced by a basketball player turned fashion designer named Raphael.

They signed me up as their brand ambassador to showcase how basketball players dress outside the court. From there, I went to Lagos for a job with a magazine called 247 after they saw my pictures somewhere and loved it.

•        How did You Start Modelling?

That was… let me see….. I finished from the university in 2011 and I didn’t go for national service immediately… I went for my youth service program in 2012 so I started modelling in 2011. I have done lots of runway but not as much as TV commercials.

I was attracted to modelling and photography at a very tender age. I love striking different postures on the mirror. My sisters and friends even people I meet do talk about how I look like a model, my charisma and I was encouraged to go into modelling by a friend of mine who is also a model. At the initial time, I was reluctant or may be shy and just to stop her from encouraging me, I told her I could not afford to pay for my photo session. To my greatest surprise, she paid for my photo session, registered me at Black dove modelling agency and since then I never looked back.

•        What was your first official job?

My first job was a Glo Tv commercial, it was done with Psquare

•        How Much Were You Paid?

Two hundred and fifty thousand naira

•        Which Is More Lucrative Basketball Or Modelling?

Both have their advantage and disadvantage. You get paid for a modelling job for a day which is a month salary in basketball but basketball is on a salary basis.

I think Modelling pays more than basketball but it depends on the period. For basketball, apart from the salary you get bonus, traveling allowance so that brings you money which is for a period of time as well.

•        That Means You Were Doing Basketball And Modelling. Didn’t It Affect Your Basketball In Any Way?

Yea it did……. …….  I just started modelling again after I stopped in 2012 because I had to go for service and then play for Oluyole Warriors and you can’t mix basketball with any other thing because every now and then we are always on the road, the stress and the rigorous training and as a model you need to look good at all times and not looking stressed. So it was difficult for me to combine both and I found myself playing basketball and leaving modelling.

•        What Are The Challenges You Face In Modelling?

In the modelling world you have to be gay friendly and we were made to understand that most fashion designers are gay so you have to tolerate them for a good working relationship, they even hit on you sometimes but if you cannot condole them it will be a big problem for you.

•        But do you get advances from them?
Yes I do, a lot. The good thing is that I am a friendly person so I have a good interpersonal relationship with people so I have found my way around them.
Like my first experience was with a well-known fashion designer who is gay. Sorry I can’t mention names.

Okay go ahead.

The guy who introduced me to him , is also a well know runway model warned me to be gay friendly so I’ll know what to do if he hits on me which actually happened when I went to see him in his office. "It’s either you are in or out, either it’s a yes or no", and when I said no, he didn’t give me the job and walked me out of his office. That was enough reason to give up on modelling but I didn’t.

•        What About Advances From The Opposite Sex?

Yeah I think I have experienced some but most times I work with the male folks.
Another challenge is that modelling jobs are spontaneous. They expect you at the venue or event or photo shoot and location as soon as possible. And sometimes when you get the job, you don’t get paid immediately till weeks or months after the job.

•        What About Your Acting Career?

I was in” Okon Goes To School” produced eight years ago and the recent one I did was a TV series called….” This Thing Called Marriage” I was in the second episode.

•        Is There Anything You Can Place Your Hand Into If It Is Not Acting, Modelling Or Basketball?

I would probably be teaching; may be creative studies. *laughs*

•        Where Do See Yourself In The Next Few Years In All Your Profession?

I see myself acting in Hollywood. I’m not looking at Nigeria. I have a very big dream and when I tell people they laugh about it. I like things that challenge me and it’s only the music industry that is doing really well in Nigeria.
For basketball, I still want to play ABL. And one regret if am going to end basketball now, is that I did not represent Nigeria .I might still play in the Nigerian league next season and I believe if I work so hard I  might get the opportunity to play in the national team.
And for modelling, I see myself getting to that level where you look around you see my picture, billboard, poster, calendar that’s how passionate I am.

•        What Will You Advise People Who Want To Do So Many Things Especially The Basketball Players?

Education is key. I think first things first you have to educate yourself. If I was not educated I won’t have gotten so many jobs because you get a job through interaction with people, interviews and have a mind-set to know what you want to do.

QUEEN JOHN CHALLENGE

I just want you to pick one of the options I will give to you.

       Basketball or Football?      Basketball
       Basketball or Modeling?    Basketball
       Lebron James or Kobe Bryant?  Lebron
       DSTV LEAGUE or ABL?  DSTV
       Kano Pillars or Kwara Falcon? Kwara Falcons
       Hilary Clinton or Donald Trump? Hilary
       APC or PDP? PDP
       Nollywood or Hollywood? Hollywood
       Polygamy or Monogamy? Monogamy
       Girls or Money? ………. *laughs* Both! But Money more

Stay glued to this space for the next chat with another basketball player.

7/12/2016

Leading Nigerian sports wear manufacturer, Owu Sports will kit the two teams at next week’s Victor Ezeji Testimonial match.

The game comes up on Saturday, December 17, 2016 at the Sharks FC Stadium and both Team Ezeji and Team NPFL players will play in Owu kit.

This much was announced by Chairman, Main Organising Committee of the Victor Ezeji Testimonial China Acheru in Port Harcourt.

“Owu Sports has become a major player in the Nigeria Professional Football League in recent times kitting clubs like Shooting Stars, Kwara Utd, Akwa Utd and Remo Stars,” The Main Organising Committee chairman said.

Acheru continued that it’s indeed noteworthy that a brand like Owu has decided to identify with the Ezeji Testimonial.

“They are a Nigerian brand with quite a number of years in the league now and we are happy to have them as partners.”

Chief executive officer Owu Sports Wear, Barrister Tunji Brown speaking to VET media confirmed the partnership and informed that his company will be charged with also producing replica kits to be worn by fans for the event.

“We are partnering with them in the supply of kits for the event. This is in the area of kits that will be worn by Victor Ezeji and friends and the NPFL players that will be playing and also with the provision of replicas for the event. That is exactly what we are doing.”

Brown also spoke of his company’s delight on being part of the first testimonial to be held for a player in the Nigerian league.

“If you look at what Victor Ezeji has done for the league, it is comparable to what the likes of Ryan Giggs and Steven Gerard did for the English Premier League with so many years behind them.

“It is exactly what Ezeji has done for the Nigerian League.

“It (testimonial) also serves as motivation for those that are presently playing in the Nigerian League that you could actually make a living playing in the Nigerian league and when you eventually hang up your boots that Nigeria will also be willing to celebrate you just as it is being done for Victor Ezeji right now,” Tunji Brown said.

The Victor Ezeji Testimonial will be played on the 17th of December in Port Harcourt and is expected to feature Friends of Victor squaring up against a Team NPFL.
