Benteke is king of the record books

(FIFA.com)

Sometimes it takes longer to describe a goal than it took to score it, as the following example shows:

Gibraltar kick off their 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™ qualifier against Belgium. The ball finds its way back to Jamie Bosio, who plays a short pass to Ryan Casciaro, only to see the advancing Christian Benteke nip in to intercept it.

Taking a couple of touches as he closes in on goal, the striker takes on a defender, shifts the ball on to his left foot and slams it past keeper Deren Ibrahim.

It takes around ten seconds to read that description of a goal that Benteke took just 8.1 to score. In doing so, he set a new record for the fastest goal ever scored in the history of the World Cup, qualifiers and finals matches included.

“The coach told us to press up front as soon as the match started,” said the record-breaking Benteke, giving an equally rapid description of the goal to Belgian broadcaster RTBF after the match. “The defender didn’t anticipate the pass very well and I got in there and was able to score. The defender was very passive and I made the most of it.”

“He scored and he kept hold of the ball,” said his coach Roberto Martinez. “He deserved it for all the hard work he’s done in the last few weeks. He’s come through a very testing season and he’s on the way to rediscovering his very best form.”

The 25-year-old Benteke’s strike was nominally quicker than the previous fastest, scored by San Marino’s Davide Gualtieri in a World Cup qualifier against England in November 1993, a landmark achievement for one of the minnows of world football and which has now finally been bettered, almost 23 years on.

“It wasn’t my intention. My intention was to go and enjoy the game and get three points,” added a smiling Benteke. “It just shows that we were fully focused right from the start. We weren’t selfish. We play for each other, and the aim was to get an early goal and set ourselves up for the win. And, well, that’s what I did.”

Just for good measure, the Crystal Palace striker went on to complete a hat-trick in Faro, where Gibraltar play their home games, as the Belgians cruised to a 6-0 win that keeps them well on course for Russia 2018.

WCQs: Brazil hit the front, Argentina slip up again

(FIFA.com)

Brazil beat Venezuela to make it four wins in a row and take to the top of the table in the South American qualifying competition for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™.

A Canarinha and closest pursuers Uruguay, who picked up a valuable point in Colombia, have now opened up a gap on the five teams below them, who are separated by a mere three points.

The day’s other winners were Paraguay, who secured a historic win in Argentina to move within a point of the play-off place, and Chile, who scored a late win in the Clásico del Pacífico against Peru. Like Bolivia, who were held at home by Ecuador, the Peruvians passed up another opportunity to move into contention for a place at Russia 2018. FIFA.com rounds up the highlights of the tenth round of matches in South America.

Matchday 10 results
11 October

Bolivia 2-2 Ecuador
Colombia 2-2 Uruguay
Argentina 0-1 Paraguay
Chile 2-1 Peru
Brazil 2-0 Venezuela

Match of the day
Colombia 2-2 Uruguay

Colombia and Uruguay served up an exciting encounter on a rainy night in Barranquilla. The more enterprising of the two sides, the hosts lacked a cutting edge in the box, and needed a set-piece to take the lead, with the Uruguayans replying from a dead-ball situation of their own.

Suarez looked to have secured three points for the visitors with his solo effort, but there was still time for Mina to get forward and head an equaliser that left the Colombians in fourth. Beaten on their three previous visits, Uruguay collected their first ever point in the Caribbean city.

Elsewhere

Brazil made light of Neymar’s absence to ease to a 2-0 win over Venezuela in a match temporarily halted by a floodlight failure. The men on target for the Brazilians were Gabriel Jesus, who punished a loose clearance by Vinotinto goalkeeper Daniel Hernandez with delightful chip, and Willian. A Canarinha have now won all four of their games under new coach Tite, though the result was hardly a surprise, with Venezuela continuing their unwanted record of never having beaten Brazil in a World Cup qualifier, a 16-match run comprising 15 defeats and a draw.

Without an away win since the opening matchday, Paraguay set that record straight with a 1-0 victory over Argentina in Cordoba. The only goal of the game came from Derlis Gonzalez in the opening half, the first time La Albirroja have scored on Argentinian soil in nine world finals qualifiers. Justo Villar completed the hosts’ misery by saving a Sergio Aguero penalty. Without the services once more of Lionel Messi, La Albiceleste have now gone three matches without a win, but remain fifth in the table.

Ecuador stayed third after salvaging a useful point in Bolivia, coming from two goals down to draw 2-2. A Pablo Escobar double looked to have set the home side on the way to a comfortable win, only for Enner Valencia’s second-half brace to deny them as La Tri stretched their unbeaten run in qualifiers in La Paz to five games, a run that goes back to 2000 and includes two draws and three wins.

Finally, Chile ended a four-game winless run with a vital 2-1 defeat of Peru, both their goals coming from Arturo Vidal, the second five minutes from time. The Peruvians, for whom Edison Flores scored, have still to win a World Cup qualifier in Chile, a ten-game sequence consisting of seven defeats and three draws.

Player of the day
Arturo Vidal (Chile)

In what was a vital match for Chile, the 29-year-old midfielder stood tall and struck a brace as La Roja saw off old rivals Peru. In scoring his first goals of the campaign since the defeat to Paraguay in Asuncion on Matchday 7, “King Arturo” took his tally for the competition to six, putting him second in the scoring charts behind Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani.

Did you know?
With his goal against Colombia, Suarez moved past Chile’s Marcelo Salas and level with Argentina’s Hernan Crespo as the joint highest goalscorer of all time in the South American World Cup preliminaries with 19 goals. The Uruguayan needed 44 games to reach that figure, while Crespo took 33.

What they said
“I’m concerned because we’ve had two very poor performances. We were disorganised, we  played with an air of desperation and we made things easy for the opposition. Overall, we were poor. When you play badly, you play badly and there are no excuses.” Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano

Buhari To Declare 2016 Nigerian Army Sports Festival Open

9/10/2016

PictureTY Buratai (chief of Army staff) and Solomon Dalung
Abuja is set to come alive on Monday as a “high powered delegation” led by President Muhammadu Buhari will converge in the capital of Nigeria for the opening ceremony of the 2016 Nigeria Army Sports Festival.

The event will hold at the mainbowl of the National Stadium.

Chairman of the Central Organizing Committee of the 16th edition of the games, Major General John S. Malu confirmed this to newsmen over the weekend in Abuja immediately after the final rehearsal for the colorful event.

According to him, “The President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces will be the Special Guest of Honor for the opening ceremony. We have invited the 36 state Governors, all the ministers. It is going to be a very high powered delegation.”

He explained that the week long event which in the words of Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Tukur Buratai is marking the beginning of victory celebration in the war against terror in Nigeria will have about 1,760 athletes across 6 Divisions of the Army competing in 19 sports.

“The war on terror is almost over. If soldiers that are engaged in the fight against terror can have time to come and do sports, then every other person is free to come to Nigeria to invest and go about their businesses peacefully. That is one of the main reasons for this event. To reassure the international community that Nigeria is very safe.”

On the events for the sports festival, Malu said, “In total, they are 19 events cutting across football, table tennis, tennis, chess, scrabble, taekwondo, judo, wrestling, half marathon, Tug of War and boxing amongst others.

Though athletics is grouped as one event, there are a lot of events in athletics.

There are 3 events that are purely military i.e obstacle crossing and combat relay.”
He concluded that the game is in line with the Federal Government’s decision to take sports back to the grassroots and ensure early preparation for Team Nigeria contingents in future sporting events.

“After the event, we expect that the Nigerian Army would have produced athletes that will represent the nation at the next All Africa Games and the Olympics.”
