Hockey chief wants return to School Sports

Board member of the Nigeria Hockey Federation, Arthur Jumbo says the only way the country can make any progress in the game and even aspire to win at the world stage would be to return to schools for development.

Arthur Jumbo was a guest at the monthly round table meeting with journalists in Port Harcourt tagged, the SWAN/ Rivers Platform.

Jumbo pointed out that getting a hockey medal at the 2024 Olympic Games will not be a big deal if there is a total dedication within the ranks.

“I do not think it is a big thing to achieve. It is about dedication. If we have exposure and consistent tournaments then we can be on the right path to achieving this.

“We must also go back to schools because that would be building the very foundation for them.

“The Olympic Games is still seven years away and I tell you that you can even get a fresh player to start playing hockey today and he will be ready for the Olympic Games in 2024,” Jumbo said.

He reiterated the need for competitions after the talents are searched out from the schools.

“There must be lots of competitions which we do not have in right now in Nigeria.

“Here we have just one tournament and you can never achieve much with that. You cannot even achieve anything with it, but the most important of them all is the schools.

“We need to teach kids the basics, get them to love the game. The fundamentals need to be learned at a young age,” the former Rivers State hockey boss said.

“Seven years is a long time to plan and we can get these players exposed and ready for the big time. We also need a foreign coach.

“I am not against Nigerian coaches, but we are talking exposure here. We need to get a foreign coach to aide what we do in the schools and I believe in seven years we will be ready,” Jumbo enthused.

Arthur Jumbo, at the SWAN/ Rivers Platform spoke on other issues from why he is going to the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC to petition certain members of the association over missing funds that led to his stepping aside as chairman and many others.

The SWAN/ Rivers Platform is a monthly roundtable meet between a sports personality and the media in the state and is powered by the Ufuoma Egbamuno owned Foskolo Media.

Tottenham have been handed the toughest draw of the five Premier League sides in the Champions League with holders Real Madrid and former winners Borussia Dortmund alongside them in Group H.

Both Manchester clubs and Liverpool will be licking their lips at favourable draws while Chelsea will also be expecting to progress with relative ease despite having to play Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid.

Celtic, meanwhile, have been handed a nightmare draw as they're tasked to face last season's runners-up Juventus and mega-rich PSG in Group B.

GROUP A

Benfica (Portugal)
MANCHESTER UNITED (England)
Basle (Switzerland)
CSKA Moscow (Russia)

GROUP B

Bayern Munich (Germany)
PSG (France)
Anderlecht (Belgium)
Celtic (Scotland)

GROUP C

CHELSEA (England)
Atletico Madrid (Spain)
Roma (Italy)
Qarabag (Azerbaijan)

GROUP D

Juventus (Italy)
Barcelona (Spain)
Olympiacos (Greece)
Sporting Lisbon (Portugal)

GROUP E

Spartak Moscow (Russia)
Sevilla (Spain)
LIVERPOOL (England)
Maribor (Slovenia)

GROUP F

Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine)
MANCHESTER CITY (England)
Napoli (Italy)
Feyenoord (Holland)

GROUP G

Monaco (France
Porto (Portugal)
Besiktas (Turkey)
RB Leipzig (Germany)

GROUP H

Real Madrid (Spain)
Borussia Dortmund (Germany)
TOTTENHAM (England)
Apoel (Cyprus)

Both Spurs and Liverpool were in danger of being handed troublesome draws being sat in the third pot of four but Jurgen Klopp will be delighted to have avoided Mauricio Pochettino's fate.

While Spurs face Dortmund, Cypriots Apoel and the might of Real - including former White Hart Lane heroes Gareth Bale and Luka Modric - Liverpool play Spartak Moscow, Sevilla and Slovenian champions Maribor.

In Manchester, Pep Guardiola and Jose Mourinho will be equally delighted.

Having been the on the receiving end of several tough draws in recent seasons City will be the overwhelming favourites to win their group as they face Shakhtar Donetsk, Napoli and Feyenoord.

United, meanwhile, arguably have it even easier with Benfica, Basle and CSKA Moscow standing in the way of progress to the last 16.

Former Rivers State Hockey chief goes to anti-corruption body

4/8/2017

By Peter Abaje

The former chairman of the Rivers State Hockey Association, Arthur Jumbo has told chinaacheru.com that he is going the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC over a case of misappropriation of funds.

Jumbo stepped down as chairman of the Hockey Association two days ago after money was allegedly shared among some principal staff of the Rivers State sports ministry.

He stressed that the ICPC became an option because the persons involved squandered the money (refunds) meant for him and the team, knowing he will not “play ball” with them after spending his personal resources to camp the athletes (male & female hockey team) at the University of Port Harcourt as well logistics to and from Abuja and daily allowance for the athletes in the competition proper.

"This matter will not end until the ICPC get to the wade in and ensure the right things are done,” Jumbo said.

"You can imagine the kind of administrators we have. Rather than refund whatever I spent in camping the athletes and participation at the Super League in Abuja they decided to hand the money over to my secretary and others to share because they knew I will not play ball with them.”

Jumbo wondered why they were interested in sharing money that was made possible only after his telephone conversation with the Rivers State governor, Barr. Nyesom Wike who said he did not see any file on his table related to hockey from the Sports Ministry.

“It took my conversation with the governor for sports ministry officials to take the file to Government House for approval after the competition had started.

"Just imagine these people. They didn't do anything about our file until after my telephone chat with the governor; meanwhile our proposal and budget was summited before the dissolution of the state exco.

"Now they were so much in a hurry to share the money when it was finally approved without my knowledge. Is that how to do things? No!  They will face the music," Jumbo said

The former National team hockey player added that his passion for the Sport made him import hockey sticks from Dubai and what he got in return were acts inimical to betrayal and corruption.

Meanwhile, the Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State sports ministry, Michael Nnodim told Chinaacheru.com via telephone that he had no idea what the brouhaha was about.

“I have not yet been briefed on the latest developments in the Hockey Association. I am hearing this for the first time. Nobody has told me anything,” Nnodim said.
