Rivers Hoopers Basketball Club of Port Harcourt will play hosts to Kwara Falcons in their third match of this season's Kwese Premier Basketball League on Thursday in Port Harcourt.

The KingsMen successfully rebounded from an opening day defeat against Nigeria Customs in Lagos to beat Police Baton on Saturday but they are fully aware The Falcons pose a different type of threat altogether.

Rivers Hoopers head coach, Ogoh Odaudu is happy to have bounced back from his first loss and win against Police Baton on Saturday and hopes his team follows it up with a home win on Thursday.

“Whether we lose the first game or not it’s a 28 game league. You lose one you still have 27 more games to recover which we have just done. We have lost one and we have just taken one back away we will just go back and put in some more hard work and hopefully put another one away when Kwara come visiting,” said Odaudu.

Still speaking ahead of the clash against the Ilorin based side, the former Nigeria international also says he is expecting a tough game against a side who are unbeaten in four games this season.

“I am not going to expect anything less than what we expected from them last season; they are coached by a very good and experienced coach. You can tell it will be a game of coaches. We are going to work hard and hopefully at the end of the day we should be able to run away victors," he said.

Thursday's game against the Falcons from the North Central part of Nigeria will hold at the Basketball Court on 59 Niger Street, Port Harcourt at 4pm

Kwese PBL: Hoopers bounce back to beat Baton

Solomon Ajegbeyi terrorized his former side, The Police Baton, pouring 14 points, contributing Hoopers rebounding edge with 17 rebounds in a 75-63 victory on Saturday at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium Lagos.

Coach Ogoh Odaudu altered the starting five he used in the loss against Nigeria Customs on Thursday with experienced guard, Anyebe Ujoh starting in place of Victor James. Though had a minimal impact offensively, Ujoh orchestrated the team's fluid ball movement, limited Baton’s possession and kept them out of transition while dominating them defensively when called upon.

Police Baton were limited on the offense in the opening quarter, going 0-5 run for 4 minutes without scoring and finally ending the first quarter 6-18. The hosts had a better second quarter, outscoring Hoopers by a point (17-16) completing 5 of 7 from 3 point range eventually heading to the break 23-34.

It was however an electrifying third quarter for both teams offensively but Hoopers still maintained the lead into the final quarter of the game. The Kings Men had the highest run in the game recorded in the third quarter going 12-0 run (25-46) for 2 minutes with 6:53 minutes left to play.

Police Baton who just returned to the league after missing one season were led by Kelvin Dandison who scored a game high 20 points, 3 assists while Ayanlere Kamal added 15 points , 3 rebounds and 1 assist.

The Baton tried to find their rhythm in the last quarter but Hoopers guard, Friday Haruna came off the bench to make several big shots scoring 10 points while Id Ogan contributed 11 points and 2 rebounds.

Police Baton coach, Emeka Oputa believes there is still room for improvement on his team.

“We did well and we are improving as a team. If you look at the game we played good defense but we were not scoring so those little things were the things that affected my team. We had six baskets in the first quarter and we could not score until they got to 16 and those are part of the little things we need to work on.” Said Oputa.

On his part, Hoopers coach Ogoh Odaudu said his team’s mental strength helped them bounce back from Thursday’s loss.

“We did nothing, Thursday’s loss was a loss that should not be on our records. It was just unfortunate things happened the way it did. I think they did a lot better today, they were focused mentally. You could see that they played with a lot of ease and no tension that is because I told them to have fun and forget Thursday’s loss and I think they did.” Odaudu said.

Rivers Hoopers will next play Kwara Falcons on Thursday April 27 in Port Harcourt.

SWAN Henry Kalio Cup: Garden City Radio, Daar Communications seek qualification

PictureCool/Wazobia/Info team appreciate their fans after qualification
Garden City Radio and Daar Communications will battle on Friday for a semi final place in the SWAN Henry Kalio Cup if they win their last group games.

In the first game of the day, Daar Communications will lock horns with Radio UST in the first game of the day while Garden City Radio will try their luck against Radio Rivers in the final round of matches for their group.

Rivers State Television have already qualified as they amassed nine points from 4 games and Daar Communications on 4 points need a win against Radio UST who have 3 points from 3 games.

If Daar wins, they will wait on the result of the game between Garden City Radio and Radio Rivers.

Garden City Radio have 4 points and need also to win and score more goals than Daar Communications while Radio Rivers on three points will be hoping for a draw in the first game while they hope they can beat Garden City Radio to qualify.

Treasure FM, Cool Nigeria Info already through

Treasure FM are already through to the semi final having beaten Tide/ Independent Monitor via a walk over.

Treasure FM finished their group with 12 points from 4 games.

Captain of the Treasure FM side, Benson Clement described the walk over as disappointing for his team.

“I was disappointed we did not get to play against Tide. But the positive is that we finished as group leaders with twelve points.

“Now our attention is on who we meet in the semi finals. We are battle ready and focused. Our ambition is to get to the final and win but we will take one game at a time,” Clement told ChinaAcheru.com.

The Lebanese billionaires won their first ever game at the SWAN Henry Kalio Cup, beating Today FM 1-0 on Monday.

Incidentally, that win was enough to take them to the semi finals, something that elated coach, Ufuoma Egbamuno.

“I am super excited and at same time relieved. We knew all we needed to do was win and go through. Our strategy from the onset was not to concede. We've been guilty of going too far forward and exposing our defence line. So technical team which includes Koffi Bartels decided to go for safety first.

“That worked well in first half and we even created great goal scoring chances. But my players wanted to be Barca or Arsenal like and pass ball into the net. I noticed that and just before half time instructed Charles "Ronaldo" Hart to shoot if he's close to the post. I reiterated same instruction at half time and it was no surprise when we scored at start of second half,” Egbamuno told ChinaAcheru.com.

“The beautiful thing about the victory was not just my first win in 2 seasons of the competition but the fact that the win ensured we would be amongst top 4 teams of the tournament. Now our fans can believe that indeed CoolWazobiaInfo and Foskolo Guardiola are not just about rants on air, they are the real deal.”

Emeka Dennar, coach of Today FM said they had issues before and during the game.

“I congratulate them for winning and qualifying but we as a team did not get it right,” Emeka Dennar told ChinaAcheru.com.

“We started without a goalkeeper as he arrived after the game had started and when he was thrown in, he wasn’t in the best of shapes.

“We had our chances though. I accept the result but feel disappointed we could not go beyond the group stage.”

Kwese Sports Premier Basketball League: Hoopers talk tough as Customs lie in wait

As Rivers Hoopers get set for their seasons’ opener in Lagos against Customs on Thursday, some new recruits have stated their targets for the 2017 Kwese Sports Premier Basketball League season.

Emmanuel Balogun and Solomon Ajagbeyi who joined the team from Nigeria Customs are elated to join the two-time champions of the Nigeria basketball league, Rivers Hoopers and want to consolidate on last season’s outing.

Balogun disclosed to Hoopers media that he joined the Port Harcourt based side because of their pedigree.

“I need a bigger team and a bigger platform, a team that has a bigger vision, that’s why I decided to join Hoopers. I want to help the team qualify for the continent,” Balogun stated.

The former Comets guard who played for Customs for four years was not encouraged to stay for an extra season. He however expressed optimism about achieving his target with the former champions.

“Last season we (Customs) were unable to achieve our goals because of financial problems but I trust Hoopers to achieve that goal.” said Balogun

In the same vein, Ajagbeyi who is a left-handed player and nicknamed “Baba Lefty” was modest in his discussion with the club's media officer, Queen John when she reminded him of his exploits against Hoopers last season.

“One thing I always tell people is not to rely on a person hundred percent but I will do my best to make sure we win the championship.

Despite admitting the importance of his addition to the team, lefty says he believes in playing as a unit and not by individual talent.

“My addition to the team and my other teammates that came together here is a plus to the team and we believe we will deliver positively,” Ajagbayi posited.

Rivers Hoopers, also known as "The Kings Men” will travel to face Customs this Thursday in their first game of the season and the former Customs Power Forward is not prepared to lose to his former side.

“By God’s grace, we are going to take the game because we can’t afford to lose to customs my former team. All I want to do is to put my possible best and I pray that my other teammates put their best into the game. I believe with this team we have now we will not lose because what they did last season when I was there was not encouraging.

After sacrificing everything they just fumbled but anyway that is just it , I don’t want to lose to them. I will put my possible best to make sure we win customs.” He declared.

The Kings Men will face Nigeria Customs on Thursday April 20 before taking on Police Baton on Saturday April 22 in Lagos.

PictureEcstasy! Wave FM celebrate their third goal against Today FM
There will be no games in the SWAN Henry Kalio Cup until Monday as the tournament goes on a three day break.

Organisers, the CorporatePH6 Ltd on Wednesday morning informed participants that there will be no more games until Monday, April 17 as the owners of the facility where the tournament holds have said the pitch would not be available for use.

The games have been played at the Sharks FC Stadium which is owned by the Rivers State Sports ministry.

Meanwhile, in Tuesday’s games, Cool/Wazobia/Info FM forced Wave FM to a draw as the encounter ended 1-1.

Justice Worgu put Wave FM ahead and for a moment it seemed as though they would win their first ever game at the Henry Kalio Cup but Allen Onyege equalized for the Billionaires and it remained 1-1 at full time.

Embattled manager of Wave FM, Queen John described it as a lost opportunity to finally win a game and bow out out on a high.

“We could have bowed out honourably from the tournament but we missed so many scoring opportunities in the game.

“Also poor communication led to the goal we conceded. All the same, we leave with our heads high by at least preventing the billionare side from getting their first win and also learning a lot, hoping that next edition will be a better outing for the team,” Queen John told ChinaAcheru.com.

Manager of the billionaire Cool/Wazobia/Info FM side, Ufuoma Egbamuno who returned to the dugout after what the rumour mills called a one match suspension for incompetence said poor marksmanship has been their bane.

“We played well, especially in the first half where we created loads of chances. Unfortunately, all that work was undone by by poor marksmanship.

“Our attackers squandered loads of opportunities, sometimes one on one with the keeper and if only we could take our chances we won’t be where we are now with two points from three games,” Egbamuno told ChinaAcheru.com.

In the second game of the day, Treasure 98.5 FM thrashed Today 95.1 FM 3-1 to maintain a one hundred percent record in this year’s edition.

Edward Okpotu opened scores for Treasure FM and Stanley Nwoghalu made it 2-0.

Igwechi put Today FM to the sword with the third goal for his side before Uchendu Ejiowhor pulled one back for the losers.

Coach of Today FM, Emeka Dennar reveled in the fact that they have been the only side to score a goal against Treasure FM in this year’s tournament.

“It was a sad loss but we look on the bright side. We are the only team to score against Treasure FM in this year’s tournament,” Dennar told ChinaAcheru.com.

Captain of Treasure FM, Benson Clement revealed that it was good revenge for his side.

“In the first edition of this tournament, we lost 2-1 to Today FM and getting a 3-1 win over them is simply fantastic.

“I am disappointed that we let them score a cheap goal in the second half because we all wanted a clean sheet.

“Overall the win has placed us in the semi finals which is more important to us. We hope to continue this winning mentality when we entertain Tide next week,” Clement told ChinaAcheru.com

The SWAN Henry Kalio Cup is played in honour of former Rivers State chairman of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, SWAN, Henry Kalio who lost his life in an accident while on his way to cover a league game in 2004.

PictureDejected! Garden City Radio players after the draw against AIT/ Ray Power
Two of the top sides in this years tournament, Today FM and Treasure FM go head to head in the SWAN Henry Kalio Cup on Tuesday in Port Harcourt.

Treasure FM have won two games so far, scoring seven and conceding none while Today FM have one win and a draw under their belt with two MVP awards going to Victor Kwame Sampong, also known as Ghanaman.

While these two top sides play the second game of the day, Cool/ Wazobia/ Info FM and Wave FM will clash in the game of whipping boys at 3pm.

While Wave FM have lost both games they have been involved in so far, the Lebanese billionaires were at least able to pick a point against champions, Tide/ Independent Monitor Newspapers.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Television, RSTV continued with their 100% record in the tournament, winning their third game on the bounce on Monday against Radio Rivers 2-1.

Martins Junior opened scores for RSTV before Stephens doubled their lead.

Late in the game, Sylvanus Iyalla pulled one back for Radio Rivers but RSTV held on to win.

Manager of RSTV, James Onoja described the game against Radio Rivers as the toughest his side had played.

“With three of my players half fit with injuries, I had to gamble with them.

“I employed a 3-1-1 formation and it was okay for us. The most heart breaking moment for us though was the injuty to our goalkeeper but thank God he came back,” Onoja told ChinaAcheru.com.

“We have nine points from three games and we look forward to keeping clean sheets until we lift the cup,” Onoja said.

The second game of the day between Garden City Radio and Daar Communications had all the drama required in a game of that magnitude and the fans were the biggest winners.

Garden City Radio threw away a 3-1 lead allowing Daar Communications draw level at 3-3.

Benjamin Okenna Sawadinho opened scores for Garden City Radio and then Sanipe Damiete Tonte scored to make it 2-0.

In the second half, Sunday Braimah pulled on back for Daar Communications but Benjamin Okenna Sawadinho was on hand to make it 3-1 before the drama began.

Sunday Braimah got his second of the day to make it 3-2 and just before full time DJ skillful capitalised on a mistake from goalkeeper Carl The Pointman Orakwue to tuck the ball into a begging net.

Captain of the Daar Communications side, Peter Abaje, described it as a great game for his team.

“I must commend my players for their never say die attitude today. It goes to show that we are a team with character,” Abaje told ChinaAcheru.com.

“We are looking forward to our last match in the group and we pray a win will see us through to the knock out phase,” Abaje enthused.

Carl Orakwue of the Garden City Radio team blamed his side for the draw.

“We have ourselves to blame for failing to take the three points against Daar Communications.

“Being a goal up, all we had to do was keep possession and prevent them from playing but we kept pressing forward and gave them the opportunity to get back into the game,” Orakwue told ChinaAcheru.com.

“A point does more for them than for us and I am sure they are happy to get it. I am sure they will also admit it was a difficult game for them,” Orakwue said.

Rivers State Television beat school boys, Radio UST 3-2 to claim maximum points from two games at the ongoing SWAN Henry Kalio Cup in Port Harcourt.

RSTV won against AIT/ RayPower 2-1 in their first game while Radio UST defeated Garden City Radio 1-0, but in this top of the table clash, the “pensioners” from the State television triumphed.

Martins Junior scored first for RSTV, his 2nd of the tournament and then Sunday Royal’s sublime free kick leveled things up for Radio UST.

First half ended 1-1 but Martins Junior scored again in the 2nd half to give RSTV the lead and then he was on the score sheet for his hat trick to make it 3-1.

Richard Gbogbara scored a late consolation for Radio UST and it ended 3-2 to RSTV.

Owo Esrnesto of Radio UST told ChinaAcheru.com after the game that the RSTV team were more technical than his side.

“It was a good game but our opponents were more technical, experienced and smart with the ball.

“We lost it when we started having issues within ourselves and from that point were disorganised,”Ernesto told ChinaAcheru.com.

“The Garden City Radio team we beat in our first game were more organised than RSTV.”

AIT/ Ray Power ride high

After losing their first game, 2-1 to RSTV, the Daar Communications boys walloped Radio Rivers 4-2 in their 2nd match of the tournament.

It was a Joe Igbokwe Hattrick that gave victory to AIT/ RayPower, even after Martins Bestman opened scored for RSTV.

Martins Giadom of Radio Rivers told ChinaAcheru.com after the game that his players did well but it was just their first game of the tournament so they were still trying to get used to it.

“We actually lacked team play expected in any side playing in this kind of tournament but our opponents were younger and our inability to force them to keep the ball on the ground was our greatest undoing,” Giadom told ChinaAcheru.com.

“Having learned our lessons, the team has returned to the drawing board to strategize and ensure qualification to the next round of this prestigious Henry Kalio Cup.”

Thursday has been declared Match free day to allow journalists cover the Nigeria Professional Football League game between Rivers United and ABS FC.

The games will continue on Friday.

Treasure FM annihilate Wave FM in Henry Kalio Cup

PictureToday FM Manager, Emeka Dennar ecstatic after his side's last minute equaliser
Radio Nigeria Treasure FM on Tuesday completely annihilated Wave FM 5-0 in the SWAN Henry Kalio Cup.

Stanley Nwoghalu scored a double brace and then Igwechi Onwuchukwu made it 5 to send the hapless Wave 91.7 FM team back to their bases with their tails between their legs.

Wave FM, the whipping boys from the last edition also lost their opening game 1-0 to defending champions, Tide.

Team Manager of the side, Queen John was very disappointed at the end of the game and could not utter any words to the press.

When she finally found her voice she told ChinaAcheru.com that the team they were up against was very good.

“It was a disappointing loss. We expected a tough match because the team we played against was very good as I watched their game against the billionaire Cool/Wazobia/ Info side so I knew we had to step up our game,” Queen John said.

“Sadly, we are below par in all aspects of the game and we paid dearly for it.”

Player/ Manager of the high flying Treasure FM side, Benson Clement was full of joy after the game.

Speaking like a Nigeria Premier League coach, he first thanked God for the win and an injury free game.

“I am also happy with the big win and the clean sheet because going into the game we knew it was not going to be easy,” Clement told ChinaAcheru.com.

“We have always believed in our abilities to overcome any team that comes our way which was the case today.

“Despite the score line, I do not think Wave FM is a bad side, just that they are not coordinated. So far we have six points from two games and sit top of the group which I think is a good sign,” Clement said.

For scoring four goals in the game, Stanley Nwoghalu received the Most Valuable Player Award of a bottle of Champagne and a cash gift.

Today FM and Tide battle to the death

It took a last minute equaliser from Victor Kwame Sampong, a.k.a. Ghanaman to give Today FM a point as Tide/ Independent monitor rued their lost chances in one of the most exciting games in the tournament so far.

GhanaMan opened scores early for Today FM through an Ikechukwu Chukwu assist but the champions equalised through Junior Ahondo.

At the restart, Junior Ahondo got his brace putting the Tide/ Monitor ahead and when it seemed like they were running away with the lead even as Today FM had Emmanuel Gbenga sent off the equaliser came.

It was virtually the last kick of the game and GhanaMan threw himself into the action and rather than go down he struggled with all the energy he had to put the ball behind Gabriel Nwanetanya who had previously registered a performance worthy of a Man of the Match outing.

Victor Kwame Sampong of Today FM won the Most Valuable Player Award for the game.

Team Manager of Today FM, Emeka Dennar praised the character of his side, especially as they were one man down for most of the second half.

“It was a difficult game for my team, especially when he had a man sent off. I also praise the character of my boys to come back and eventually snatch a draw,” Dennar told ChinaAcheru.com.

“At some point we dominated the game, missed so many scoring chances. We were not supposed to lose the game because we were on top for most times. I am satisfied,” Dennar said.

In Wednesday’s games, Rivers State Television will be up against Radio UST while AIT/ Ray Power will lock horns with Radio Rivers.

The coach of the Garden City Radio team was also given the marching orders before the end of the first half.

On learning of his fate, Bariza tweeted "Today my dream died! I've been dropped from the @TodayFM951 squad for the SWANHenryKalioCup.😩😫😩".

The Team Manager, Emeka Dennar however said it was a purely footballing reasons that led to Bariza's axe.

In his words "Before Zazi turns, the time would be almost up."
