Eating too much of these 9 popular foods may kill you

While food is good for the body and necessary for survival, humans are also expected to be wary of  the meals they ingest and the rate at which they consume them.

Some types of food, if taken excessively, are capable of causing health risks.

The onus is on you to learn why certain foods are unhealthy, why you shouldn’t take them and how you can make better choices on daily basis.

Here are some unhealthy meals to watch out for.

Egusi soup

At the mention of this soup, many will salivate as it is much-loved by many Nigerians… but hold that saliva.

Egusi contains something called phytosterols which when consumed, compete with cholesterol for absorption in the digestive system.

Also, egusi has a high level of calories and when garnished with few chunks of stock fish and two pieces of meat, it has a total of roughly 700 calories per serving.

Imagine consuming it with about 3 wraps of eba which is about 600 calories.

Loaf of sliced bread

Bread is widely consumed daily across the country especially because it doesn’t have to be cooked before consumption.

Bread belongs to the class of starchy foods and overt consumption increases the risk of getting diabetes.

If you are taking in 100 grams of bread, you are consuming 265 calories, especially if it is white bread.

Some Nigerian-made breads are also not completely bromate free.

Potassium bromate is added to help strengthen the bread dough and this chemical is cancerous.

If you can steer off bread, there are other excellent choices that are low in carbs.

One minute Noodles

While noodles can’t be called a Nigerian food, it has been adopted into Nigeria’s stream of foods such that it is consumed by both young and old.

Nigerians go for noodles because it is cheap, easy and fast to cook, hence the name “instant noodles.”

Tests have revealed that noodles contain high sodium which aside being cancerous, causes heart disease and skin damage.

Eating too much of noodles is bad for digestion and it also leads to obesity.

Eba

Processed from cassava, garri is a food rich in carbohydrate; both the yellow and the white type.

Garri helps to restore lost energy but a high rate of consumption does more harm than good.

A cup of garri contains about 360 calories, 95% of which is carbohydrates and further consumption with soup, meat and/or fish, increases the level of calories.

Consuming a great deal of starchy foods like eba is like welcoming excess weight with open arms.

Fufu, made from cassava

Fufu is another staple food made from cassava and its origin can be traced to Ghana.

Fufu is of good nutritional value as it is rich in protein, fat, carbohydrates, potassium and low in cholesterol.

Some are turned off by the smell that fufu gives and/or the fact that it takes longer time to digest.

Research has it that every part of cassava plant has a toxic chemical called Linamarin.

This chemical, even after boiling the cassava, doesn’t change its state and this could be harmful during digestion.

Also, under-processing of fufu, which is rampant, has harmful implications on the health. This is because the cyanide content is not reduced to a non-toxic state.

Women and children are susceptible to cyanide poisoning as they are usually the ones who carry out the processing of fufu.

Good old fried plantain

There is a meme trending on social media about plantain which reads, “How can you say in good faith that the God who created plantain doesn’t love you?”.

This is proof of the love people have for plantain.

Granted, plantain is a good source of carbohydrates, vitamin B6, vitamin C and is also a natural remedy for peptic ulcer.

However, plantain contains a considerable amount of carbohydrates and more calories are produced when it is fried in oil.

Also, the water content decreases when fried and this might not be satiating enough.

Integrating plantain into your diet is making way for ample calorie intake. Taking 100 grams of plantain is consuming about 30 grams of carbohydrates, 15 grams of sugar and 120 calories.

Other methods of cooking plantain (aside frying) should be adopted if one cannot live without plantain.

Pastries

There’s an endless list of flour-based pastries which are baked, fried or roasted and are often taken between meals.

Healthy snacking helps you maintain physical and mental energy and it also helps one have control over main meals.

Snacking is however, only healthy when it is done to control appetite and meet nutritional needs. It shouldn’t become a habit because many snack foods are high in fat, calories, sugar and salt.

One tends to gain extra pounds through added daily calories if snacking is done out of boredom or habit.

Consuming too many sugary pastries could also lead to tooth decay.

Endeavour to avoid buying pastries on the street. Home-made pastries are advisable as one is sure of the type of oil used for the preparation.

Oil when used over time becomes acidic but most sellers tend to keep old oil in use and keep frying with oil which is already harmful to the health.

A bowl of rice

Rice is rich in carbohydrates and fairly low in calories. It is a good source of energy because it is carbohydrate-dense.

Consuming too much of carbohydrate-dense foods may cause one to eat little of other nutritious meals needed for a healthy life.

Eating too much rice could adversely affect glucose metabolism in the body.

White rice contains about 4 grams of fiber per cup and consuming it in excess would fill one up preventing intake of other foods.

White rice is also low in phytic acid because of the bran which is always removed during processing. Ample research has it that white rice increases the risk of getting diabetes.

It is advisable to consume brown rice or reduce the rate of white rice consumption.

Pounded yam

A lot of Nigerians love pounded yam and it is widely consumed across the country.

Pounded yam is a source of carbohydrate and a good source of energy which contains dietary fiber that helps reduce constipation.

Pounded yam is high in calories as a small slice of yam contains about 330 calories and one tin cup of pounded yam contains about 400 calories from carbohydrates alone.

Pounded yam has the highest glycemic index compared to boiled yam and the process of arriving at pounded yam makes carbohydrates more available to enzymes that disintegrate the carbohydrates to glucose.

Eating pounded yam is consuming calories with no real nutrition.

Diabetic patients are advised to steer off foods with high starch and embrace foods with low starch.

A group of international chefs launched an effort to tackle the widespread hunger problem in Rio de Janeiro by cooking surplus food donated from the Olympic Village and serving it to impoverished residents.

The 31st Olympic Games in the Brazilian city have faced major criticism as the country struggles through a massive economic crisis.

However, the catering company contracted to the Olympic Village - and 11,000 competitors - says it is doing its bit by providing meals for the hungry.

Launched by chefs Massimo Bottura of Italy and Brazil’s David Hertz, RefettoRio Gastromotiva aims to produce some 5,000 meals daily using only those ingredients that would otherwise head for the bin.

“RefettoRio Gastromotiva is going to work only with ingredients that are about to be wasted … like ugly fruit and vegetables, or yogurt that is going to be wasted in two days if you don’t buy it,” Mr Hertz told Reuters.

“We want to fight hunger and provide access to good food.”

Gastromotiva will continue through the duration of the Olympics and Paralympic Games, after which it will function as a “social business”, Mr Hertz said.

The business will also provide vocational training for aspiring restaurant professionals, including cooks, bakers, and servers.

Mr Bottura drew inspiration for the Gastromotiva from a 2015 initiative, Refetterio Ambrosiano, that brought 65 chefs together to cook meals using donated ingredients from that year’s Milan World Expo.

As the Games continue and athletes rack up their medals, so do the massive protests calling out the troubles overlooked by the country’s government.

At the start games, a group called Comitê Popular Rio organised a protest called “The Exclusion Games” that highlighted those extensive costs amid the country’s recession, political strife, and public health crises.

Young people 'are having less sex than their parents did' Good news for moralists?

By BEN SPENCER MEDICAL CORRESPONDENT FOR THE DAILY MAIL

Young adults of the ‘Tinder generation’ are having less sex than any generation since the 1920s, a study suggests.

Experts have assumed that people born in the 1990s - known as ‘Millennials’ - were more promiscuous than those who came before, due to the availability and popularity of dating apps such as Tinder and Gridr.

But scientists at Florida Atlantic University have found that people aged 20 to 24 today are more likely to abstain from sex than any generation for 90 years.

Some 15 per cent percent of this age group in the US have had no sexual partners since turning 18, the researchers found.

Of those born in the 1960s, only 6 per cent had not had sex when they were at the same age.

The only other generation that showed a similar rate of sexual inactivity were those born in the 1920s - those who turned 20 in the years of World War Two or soon after - for whom the figure was roughly the same as that of today’s 20-somethhings.

‘The new sexual revolution has apparently left behind a larger segment of the generation than first thought,’ said the researchers, writing in the journal Archives of Sexual Behaviour.

The research echoes trends seen in Britain, where teenage pregnancy rates among teenagers have plunged to a record low.

According to the Office for National Statistics there were fewer than 23,000 pregnancies among girls under 18 in England and Wales in 2014, a conception level not seen since figures began to be recorded in 1969.

The collapse in pregnancy rates follows compelling evidence that teenagers are becoming less and less likely to smoke, drink or take drugs in an age in which millions spend much of their spare time engaged with solitary social media rather than mixing with their friends.

Researchers found 15 per cent of Millennials aged 20-24 had no sex since they turned 18 compared to just six per cent of Generation X

Some researchers have pointed to a ‘Facebook effect’ which has led teenagers who would once have spent their spare time on the streets instead to devote it to playing with gadgets in their bedrooms.

Widespread public disapproval of smoking, drunkenness, drug abuse and teen mothers is also likely to have influenced teen behaviour.

Dr Ryne Sherman of Florida Atlantic University, who led the new study, said: ‘This study really contradicts the widespread notion that Millennials are the “hookup” generation, which is popularized by dating apps like Tinder and others, suggesting that they are just looking for quick relationships and frequent casual sex.

‘Our data show that this doesn’t seem to be the case at all and that Millennials are not more promiscuous than their predecessors.’

The researchers used data from the General Social Survey, a nationally representative sample of American adults which questions 18 to 96 since 1989.
Dr Sherman said that those born in the 1990s were the most likely to be sexually inactive in their early 20s, and showed a definite break with those born in the 1980s.

‘While attitudes about premarital sex have become more permissive over time, rise in individualism allows young American adults to have permissive attitudes without feeling the pressure to conform in their own behaviour,’ he said.

The man hired to have sex with children

25/7/2016

By Ed Butler
BBC News, Malawi

In some remote southern regions of Malawi, it's traditional for girls to be made to have sex with a paid sex worker known as a "hyena" once they reach puberty.

The act is not seen by village elders as rape, but as a form of ritual "cleansing".

However, as Ed Butler reports, it has the potential to be the opposite of cleansing - a way of spreading disease.

I meet Eric Aniva in the dusty yard of his three-room shack in Nsanje district in southern Malawi. Goats and chickens graze in the dirt outside. Wearing a grimy green shirt, and walking with a pronounced limp (he's been lame in one leg since birth, he says), he greets me enthusiastically. He seems to like the idea of media attention.

Aniva is by all accounts the pre-eminent "hyena" in this village. It's a traditional title given to a man hired by communities in several remote parts of southern Malawi to provide what's called sexual "cleansing".

If a man dies, for example, his wife is required by tradition to sleep with Aniva before she can bury him. If a woman has an abortion, again sexual cleansing is required.

And most shockingly, here in Nsanje, teenage girls, after their first menstruation, are made to have sex over a three-day period, to mark their passage from childhood to womanhood. If the girls refuse, it's believed, disease or some fatal misfortune could befall their families or the village as a whole.

"Most of those I have slept with are girls, school-going girls," Aniva tells me.
"Some girls are just 12 or 13 years old, but I prefer them older. All these girls find pleasure in having me as their hyena. They actually are proud and tell other people that this man is a real man, he knows how to please a woman."

Despite his boasts, several girls I meet in a nearby village express aversion to the ordeal they've had to go through.
"There was nothing else I could have done. I had to do it for the sake of my parents," one girl, Maria, tells me. "If I'd refused, my family members could be attacked with diseases - even death - so I was scared."

They tell me that all their female friends were made to have sex with a hyena.

Aniva appears to be in his 40s (he's vague about his precise age) and currently has two wives who are well aware of his work. He claims to have slept with 104 women and girls - although as he said the same to a local newspaper in 2012, I sense that he long ago lost count.

Aniva has five children that he knows about - he's not sure how many of the women and girls he's made pregnant.

He tells me he's one of 10 hyenas in this community, and that every village in Nsanje district has them. They are paid from $4 to $7 (£3 to £5) each time.

An hour's drive down the road, I'm introduced to Fagisi, Chrissie and Phelia, women in their 50s and custodians of the initiation traditions in their village. It's their job to organise the adolescent girls into camps each year, teaching them about their duties as wives and how to please a man sexually. The "sexual cleansing" with the hyena is the final stage of this process, arranged voluntarily by the girl's parents. It's necessary, Fagisi, Chrissie and Phelia explain, "to avoid infection with their parents or the rest of the community".

We have to train our girls in a good manner in the village, so that they don't go astray, are good wives so that the husband is satisfied

I put it to them that there's a much greater risk that these "cleansings" will themselves spread disease. According to custom, sex with the hyena must never be protected with the use of condoms. But they say a hyena is hand-picked for his good morals, and therefore cannot be infected with HIV/Aids.

It's clear, given the hyena's duties, that HIV is a huge risk to the community. The UN estimates that one in 10 of all Malawians carry the virus, so I ask Aniva if he is HIV-positive. He astounds me by saying that he is - and that he doesn't mention this to a girl's parents when they hire him.
As our conversation continues, Aniva senses that I am not impressed. He stops boasting and tells me that he does fewer cleansings than before. "I still do the rituals here and there," he confides. Then he tells me: "I am stopping."

Aniva with a root which he grinds up and adds to water to drink before sex
All of those involved in these rituals are aware that these customs are condemned by outsiders - not just by the church, but by NGOs and the government as well, which has launched a campaign against so-called "harmful cultural practices".

"We are not going to condemn these people," says Dr May Shaba, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Gender and Welfare. "But we are going to give them information that they need to change their rituals."

I want this tradition to end - we are forced to sleep with the hyenas, it's not out of our choice and that I think is so sad for us as women

Parents who have had more education than others may already choose not to hire a hyena, I am told. But the female elders I spoke to remain defiant.

"There's nothing wrong with our culture," Chrissie tells me. "If you look at today's society, you can see that girls are not responsible, so we have to train our girls in a good manner in the village, so that they don't go astray, are good wives so that the husband is satisfied, and so that nothing bad happens to their families."

According to Father Clause Boucher, a French-born Catholic priest who's lived in Malawi for 50 years and is now its pre-eminent anthropologist, the rituals date back centuries. They stem from age-old beliefs about the need for children to be passed into the "heat" of adulthood by a sexual act, he says. In the past, when girls tended not to reach puberty until they were 15 or 16, this would often have been carried out by a selected future husband. Today it's more likely to done by a paid sex worker, a hyena, and there's no shame attached to that.

Father Boucher points out that the efforts to change this sexualisation of children have been stubbornly resisted in remote southern areas, despite more than a century of Christianity and 30 years of the Aids epidemic. In most of the country - and particularly in areas close to the cities of Blantyre and Lilongwe - "sexual cleansing" is rarely if ever practised.

In Malawi's central Dedza district, hyenas are only ever used to initiate widows or infertile women, but the Paramount Chief Theresa Kachindamoto - a rare female figurehead in Malawi - has made the fight against the tradition a personal priority.

She is trying to galvanise other regional chiefs to make similar efforts. In some other districts, like Mangochi in the east of the country, ceremonies are being adapted to replace sex with a more benign anointing of the girl.
In Nsanje, though, there is little effort to bring about change. With Malawi one of the poorest countries in the world, and suffering from growing reports of rural hunger, it's not a policy priority.

In a remote village, I meet one of Aniva's two wives, Fanny, along with his youngest baby daughter. Fanny was herself widowed before being "cleansed" by Aniva with sex. They married soon after.

Their relationship looks strained. Sitting next to him, she admits shyly that she hates what he does, but that it brings necessary income. I ask her if she expects her two-year-old to be undergoing initiation too in perhaps 10 years from now.

"I don't want that to happen," she says. "I want this tradition to end. We are forced to sleep with the hyenas. It's not out of our choice and that I think is so sad for us as women."

"You hated it when it happened to you?" I ask.
"I still hate it right up until now."
When I ask Aniva too whether he wants his daughter to undergo sexual cleansing, he surprises me again.
"Not my daughter. I cannot allow this. Now I am fighting for the end of this malpractice."
"So, you're fighting against it, but you are still doing it yourself?" I ask.
"No, as I said, I'm stopping now."
"Really?"
"For sure. For real, I'm stopping."

Can STDs Be Transmitted Through Swimming Pools?

25/7/2016

Picture
Serina Mehrian

No, not unless you’re having sex in the pool with someone who has an STD.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an individual can only pass on an STD through direct person-to-person contact. Take syphilis, for example. The disease cannot be transmitted through casual contact with doorknobs, seats, eating utensils, or pools.

Dr. Edward Brooks, an infectious disease specialist  at Stanford Health Care, explains that there is no evidence that an individual can get an STD from casually swimming in a pool. Transmission of STDs through a hot tub or pool are only possible if two people are engaging in sexual activity while in the water. An intimate exchange of bodily fluids is necessary in order for those types of diseases to be passed along to someone else.

Although you may have dodged that STD bullet, it’s important to remember that there are other diseases one can get from being in a pool.

“The most common are diarrheal illnesses, transmitted by ingesting the organism accidentally while swimming in the pool,” Brooks said.

These types of illnesses are mainly caused by fecal contamination, which is when someone who has diarrhea goes swimming and contaminates the water with an infectious microorganism. Once the microorganism is in the water, people who ingest enough of it while swimming could become sick.

In order to protect yourself from such diseases, Brooks explains that it’s important to make sure all pools or hot tubs you choose to swim in are well-maintained. If you are using public facilities, it would be smart to verify that the facility is meeting chlorine and PH balance standards. If you have a pool of your own, learn how to correctly maintain it or hire an outside service to ensure it is being done adequately.

All public freshwater pools should be cleaned and disinfected with chlorine products, the substance used to kill bacteria, most viruses and algae. Without the use of these chemicals, we would almost always be swimming in a giant puddle of germs. Let’s just take a moment to let that sink in ― yuck!

The CDC has set of science-based guidelines that local and state public health authorities can use to create their own regulations to monitor the safety of public pools.

Brooks also said that it is very important to practice good hygiene. Take a shower before and after you go swimming to prevent the transfer of diarrheal illnesses. Also be sure to clean your bathing suit with soap and water after use.

To sum it all up, the only STDs you can get while swimming are those passed through intimate sexual contact with someone who has an infection. Practicing good hygiene, like showering before and after swimming and properly cleaning your swimsuit, can help keep you safe from the most common waterborne illnesses that could be lurking beneath the surface.

After 5000 men, prostitute says she never missed church

by Femi Famutimi

A prostitute from Nairobi called Rosemary Johns has revealed that she has slept with over 5000 men.

The 64-year-old was raised partly in Tanzania before moving to Kenya, where unforeseen circumstances led her to prostitution.

She married at 16 but after 5 children, her husband began to neglect her. She now has 8 children.

She claims that she is a staunch and baptised Christian who never misses church.

She started in 1984 and was planning to retire. She started small leso business after getting Ksh70,000 loan from a local bank, but fire razed down her house and shop in March, 2016, forcing her back to prostitution.

The veteran prostitute looked back at a career spanning over 20 years revealing that on a good day she engaged as many as 40 men while on a bad day between 5 and 10.

“It has been a long journey and I’ve slept with more than 5,000 men in more than 20 years.” She said.

5 things to note before popping painkillers

16/7/2016

Picture
By TNB Digest

It’s best to limit painkillers to only when absolutely needed and not to make them a go to as they come loaded with side effects which may not manifest immediately.

Painkillers are drugs used to treat pain and they come in different ones (as well different brands) to treat different types of pain.

A lot of people see painkillers as a part of daily/a way of life sadly and they’ve been abused (the use of painkillers) overtime and this remains a source of concern (albeit globally).

Painkillers come with different side effects from depression to hormonal imbalance, nausea, constipation and more when abused (Time)

When not prescribed or when not absolutely necessary, painkillers should be ditched and here are reasons to:

1. Numerous Side Effects

Painkillers come with different side effects from depression, hormonal imbalance, nausea, constipation, weakened immune system as well as liver and kidney damage amongst others.

It’s best to limit painkillers to only when absolutely needed and not to make them a go to as they come loaded with side effects which may not manifest immediately.

2. They are addictive

Painkillers can become a habit! A lot of people have battled with addiction to painkillers with some already taken so much that it almost doesn’t work for them anymore (these people go ahead to take over dose which comes with a lot of health risk)

3. Could be a deadly mix

Most painkillers do not go well with alcohol or even red wines. A mixture of painkillers and any form of alcohol can result in nervous disorder, heavy breathing and other signs that can be fatal.

4. Some over-the-counter painkillers don’t work

Some over-the-counter painkillers actually don’t work especially for more serious pains – not even increasing the dose helps- it’s best to get prescription from a health practitioner and not abuse it.

5. Stick to the recommended dose

As with all other drugs, painkillers should not be abused. Stick to doctor’s prescribed dose and don’t go overboard or take an over dose as this can be deadly.

8 Things You Must Consider Before Shaving Your Pubic Area

16/7/2016

Picture
By TNB Digest

Shaving your pubic area is supposed to be a simple process that will be similar to shaving every other part of your body. This logic doesn’t hold true, however, for a number of reasons including the sensitivity of the pubic region in comparison to other areas of the body.

You may have been lucky enough before reaching puberty to have an older person tell you all the details you need when it comes to shaving the pubic area yourself as you may need to go through a trial and error period if you don’t get the right type of informed experience.

Shaving your pubic hair the right way is not rocket science, neither does it follow commonsense. That’s why we’ve put together the things you should know that will hopefully, let you experience a trouble-free shaving time.

Steam Your Pubic Area

To experience as little pain as possible, steam your pubic area at least five minutes before shaving. Steaming helps to soften the hair and the skin surrounding the area which makes it easier for you to have a smooth and painless shave. You can steam this area by standing over the hot water you want to use for your bath while you do any other chore you need to do in the bathroom. The longer you steam it, the softer the hair will be.

Try Exfoliating

Once you’ve steamed your pubic area, it’s best you exfoliate lightly before the commencement of shaving. Use a sponge or any exfoliating body wash to get rid of dead skin cells that can prevent your shaving stick from gliding smoothly across the skin’s surface. Exfoliating helps to bring the blade of the shaving stick closer to the surface so it cuts off pubic hair as closely as possible.

Use A Good Shaving Stick

It is important that your shaving stick is new and the blades, sharp. Reusing a shaving stick is bound to give you problems because it won’t cut the hairs off cleanly, will cause tugging of the hair which will result in skin irritation. More so, the blades of old shaving sticks may have become rusted and this may give you small cuts on your skin when used.

Keep Your Pubic Area Clean

Since there’s a high chance of you getting a cut due to the sharpness of shaving sticks, it’s best you keep your pubic area thoroughly clean. Small cuts and an unclean pubic region may result in an infection. As such, it’s best you use soaps that are mild and which will not alter the natural pH of that area of the body.

Use Shaving Creams

Not making use of shaving cream may result in severe burns. A lot of shaving creams are designed to raise the hair on your skin so as to get a closer shave while some are made for sensitive skin which mostly surrounds the pubic area.

Trim Long Hair

If you haven’t shaved your pubic area in a long while, it’s important you trim the hair first because long pubic hairs will only complicate your shaving experience.

For one, some longer hairs can get caught in the shaving stick and get pulled. Moreover, you may need to go over one area multiple times to get the hair off and this may lead to skin irritation. Get a scissors and trim off long hair before shaving.

Never Press Too Hard

Pressing your shaving stick hard on your skin won’t help you get a closer or cleaner shave. As a matter of fact, it may even cause skin irritation. Shaving sticks are meant to do the job with very little pressure. Furthermore, going too quickly won’t allow the blade to shave off all the hairs in its path. Slow motions will ensure more hair is taken off with a single swipe and will prevent you from passing over the same area multiple times.

Not Everyone Can Shave

There are some people that just cannot shave their pubic regions. This is because they have a super sensitive skin and will always have burns and irritation every time they shave even if it is once a month. It’s best if you fall into this category to look for alternative means such as hair removal creams, waxing and laser treatments.

Leadership tussle over Assemblies of God church leaves 20 injured

The leadership tussle over the stool of the General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God Church in Nigeria, between Professor Paul Emeka and Dr. Chidi, exploded into violence in one of its branches in Saminaka, Lere Local Government Area, Kaduna State, about 140 kilometres east of Kaduna metropolis.

The fight left 20 members with injuries and two homes of resident pastors burnt. A source from the Assemblies of God Church (Jerusalem), Saminaka, told revealed in Kaduna that the fight started from 8a.m. and lasted till 2p.m. Sunday, which was later confirmed by Kaduna State Police Command.

It could be recalled that on September 15, 2015, Governor Nasir el-Rufai had ordered the closure of the church including the Theological Seminary of Northern Nigeria, Saminaka, Shalom Comprehensive College, AGC Evangelist Hospital, Saminaka, saying it was to avoid a possible breakdown of law and order, as the two factions squabbled.

According to the source, a minority faction of the church sneaked into the premises on Saturday evening and slept overnight. The source said: “We came to worship around 8a.m. Not knowing that the other faction had prepared for war. We came into the premises and secured the gates. “As soon as we had settled for the Church proceedings, about 20 members of the other faction appeared.

They were armed with knives, daggers, clubs, iron rods and other weapons. “To our surprise, Police, Army, Civil Defense personnel arrived the premises of the church almost the same time members of the other faction emerged. “The Divisional Police Officer of Saminaka, who has just been posted here, seemed in charge of the security men around. He told us to come out of the church and leave the premises.

We said we would only do so if the armed faction, which was then hauling stones at us, also left. “In no time, they attacked us, injuring many of us. Since we were not armed, we had to find ways to escape. “The most frightening thing was that the stones they were throwing were also falling into Hausa Muslims homes. If these people had reacted, I don’t know what Saminaka would have been today. “The Muslims came out and were laughing at us. It is such a disgrace.

To our surprise, the police and the rest did nothing to stop them. After inflicting injuries on us, they went to the homes of our two resident pastors and set them ablaze.” When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer for Kaduna State Police Command, ASP Aliyu Usman, in a text message to newsmen yesterday, said: “I have confirmed the story.

The case between the two factions is already in court, while the DPO attached to Saminaka Division has controlled the situation and also made arrests of the hoodlums. “The area is calm and proactive measures are been placed to prevent further escalation of the crisis.”

In what would have best been described as a twisted home movie, four schoolgirls have told the story of how they were allegedly recruited into prostitution by one Abigail Nweke Alo aka ‘Chairlady’, Vanguard reports.

According to the report, the girls -Felicia Nzuworgar, 17, Patience Williams, 18, Angela Benjamin, 17 and Charity Nkwogor – were tricked into working at an alleged brothel in the Calabar business area.

The four girls are from Okun and Vandeikya Local Government Areas of Benue State where Abigail took them from in January under the guise that she was taking them to Lagos to work at a beer palour as sales girls.

One of the girls, Felicia told vanguard that, “I was selling oranges in our market in Okun when she tapped me on the shoulder and I turned thinking she wanted to buy oranges but she told me she had  a business in Lagos and wanted me to follow her. I did not know what came over me. I just followed her without even telling my parents and friends where I was going.”

A senior secondary school 2 Student in Vandiekya, Patience narrated how she left her grandmother’s house and followed Abigail. She said that a certain commercial motorcycle rider, Mike, had informed her about Abigail and that she was looking for a salesgirl.

“I told Mike that I was still in school and could  not go with the lady and  that she should look for someone else. But instead of looking  for somebody else, Mike went and brought the lady and when she looked into my eyes, I simply went inside and packed my clothes and followed her without waiting for my grandmother who went out to come back.”

On her own part, Angela said she was on her way home from school when she was mysteriously compelled by Abigail to follow her.

The girls said that they stopped over at Enugu where they slept in a house of a man who had seven wives. The man gave them a concoction to drink.

Felicia said, “The man took us into his medicine hut and gave us the concoction to drink and, when we refused to drink, he beat us. He told us that if we went out without drinking, we will die.  After we drank, he said that if we ran away from ‘Chairlady’, our private parts would rot and we will die.”

They continued their journey the next day.

“We got to Calabar in the night  and when I asked ‘Chairlady’  if this was Lagos, she said yes.”

The following day, Abigail gave the girls boxer shorts and instructed them to begin hustling for men. She beat them mercilessly when they refused.

“We arrived Calabar in the night and, the next morning, she collected our phones and brought boxer shorts to us that we should wear and, when we asked her where the drinking parlour was so that we could  start work, she said we should hustle like other girls were doing by sleeping with men and, when we refused, she beat us up mercilessly,” Patience said.

After days of relentless beating and starvation, the girls agreed to begin sleeping with men. No on came to their rescue because, “Everybody in the hotel was afraid of her because she  was their boss and, if anyone dared  to challenge her, she will send the person out of the place.”

The girls disclosed that they had to sleep with over twenty men a day. The money they made was taken by Abigail, who left them with only N500.

“It was very painful when we started. Everyday  we slept with  an average of  twenty men for N500.00 each and, because we were young and new, men would  line up and wait for us till  about 12 midnight when the hotel closes and then ‘Chairlady’ will come in and collect the money and, since she used to count the condoms she was giving  us, if you did not give her all the money, she will beat you mercilessly”, Patience said.

Two of the girls, Angela and Charity attempted to run away from Abigail but they were apprehended and beaten mercilessly.

“When I tried to run away, she brought a soldier   and a policeman who were her  friends who  beat me up and poured tear gas in my eyes and, because of that, I became very sick and   could not stand up for many days.”

Abigail has been arrested by Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of Cross River State Police Command and is facing trial for human traffiking.
