What on earth is a book reading party?

PictureLisetta Woluchem and the author, Stanley Jack

By Lisetta Woluchem (Chinaacheru.com)

No experience is ever wasted. An experience, once gotten goes a long way sometime in future.

I'm what you'll call a collector, but while most people collect antiques, I collect books. I'm interested in anything that's not my text book. I can stay awake all night reading a novel. I'm studious like that.

One day, I went to see a friend, who's also an ardent and vast reader, and he gave me some books, amongst which was Good To Go.

Good to Go is a book written by a certain, Stanley Jack. I had never heard of him before that day, but it was a book so I thought I would give it a shot.

I flipped through a few pages, had a faint idea of what the book was all about, but decided to keep it until I'd read a couple from my already long pile of unread books.

But on July 22nd, I got a call from this person asking that I go attend a book reading party the next day.

What on is a book reading party?

A book reading party? What in God's name was that? I had never heard of it, talk more of attending one.

I went to see him, and he gave me a brief rundown of what to expect at a book party with some advice that I read a thing or two from the book.

Even though every fibre of my being wanted me to scream NO! I didn't because I wanted to attend and see what it was like.

First of all, I viewed it as an opportunity, and then an experience.

I also didn't have any reasonable thing to do on Saturday, so what the hell, right?

Attending the book reading party

The book party was slated for noon and being one with an illness of late coming, I had to go with a friend that was supposed to 'keep me in check'.

We did everything on time, but thanks to traffic, we got to Bookville by Mummy B road, in Port Harcourt, the venue of the event at ten minutes past noon.

Bookville is a bookshop, so you can imagine my surprise when I got there and saw about thirty chairs with some already occupied.

I didn't say a word, I wrote my name in a register and took my seat.

We waited until 1pm, and finally this 'party' started.

As with almost every gathering in Nigeria, it started with an opening prayer, and guests were introduced.

I heard I was coming for a book reading party and a lot of pictures went through my mind.

In my mind's eye there was going to be a DJ, perhaps dancers and all that. The only imagination I got right was the presence of an MC and a comedian.

The editor of the book, Stanley Jack was called upon to give a brief summary of the book.

The comedian took to the stage and cracked people up a bit. After all it is said that all work and no play....

The author was then introduced and called upon to introduce his book.

After that, it was time for contributions and questions.

My reading the book actually paid off because I had a couple of questions to ask, and I also had the privilege of having the author himself answer my questions.

I felt important to be in such an educative gathering. In all my imaginations, never had I thought that I'll get to view a book from the eyes of the author!

A guest in the gathering made a few contributions, and I couldn't agree more that Good To Go is a book everybody must read.
It gives you a better view of everything and life in general. It broadens your knowledge of education and throws better light to the ever increasing hype of going to school.

Time up! All due protocols had been observed, and the closing prayer had been said. It was time for autographs.

I have tons of books, but none that's been autographed by the author himself.

I still can't decipher why it's called a book reading party, but whatever the reason might be, there's actually a need for it.

Maybe, the fact that there was a comedian cracking people up, or the fact that there was small chops and drinks. I really do not know.

However, I know I achieved a lot on Saturday, July 23, 2016.

Apart from having my book signed by an actual author, or getting to view a book from the eyes of the writer, it actually felt good to be in a gathering of intellectuals.

After attending the book reading party, I got to learn anew that an experience is actually a tool to help one through life.

P Square battle continues

The Okoye brothers had the whole of Africa on their issue earlier in the year when they had their family issues.

It started with manager issues (their manager is Jude Okoye) and it went further really with more revealing facts. At a point, we thought they were going to split up. Heck, we even wrote why we thought they would here.

But well, it turns out that they kissed and made up and in as much as we were wrong, we liked it.

But it seems the plot thickens deeper than that, really.

So this week, there was a concert in Congo and Peter and Paul were supposed to perform because the name said P-Square.

But somehow, it’s just Paul showing up in Congo, and then it was said that Peter couldn’t come due to health issues. But it turns out that Peter wasn’t actually sick rather he wasn’t aware of the concert.

Anyway, Peter shared a post on his Instagram where he said he was fine and healthy and it was a case of misrepresentation. And he ended up saying he was going to take legal actions.

Good To Go: A book review

21/7/2016

PictureStanley Jack's Good To Go
By China Acheru

Good To Go is a book that simply tells the young Nigerian male or female, especially those just out of the mandatory one year national service that they must be ready for the challenge ahead.

But Good To Go is more of a question than a charge, or is it?

What the author, Stanley Jack did here was to use history, traditional beliefs, religion and basic Nigerian life to tell the story of how a young person can be successful in spite of his/ her educational qualifications.

How did the Nigerian/ Biafran Civil war of the 60s affect your life as regards the compulsory one year Youth Service?

Did president Goodluck Jonathan change your life? Can president Buhari change it?

How does a Master of Business Administration end up mopping floors in a restaurant in Nigeria?

Was/ is there a conspiracy by present/ past Nigerian rulers to see to it that you are not enlightened?

What does the history of Nigeria’s creation tell about how successful the rulers want you to be?

What role has the church played in this conspiracy?

In reading through Good To Go I see passion in the way Stanley Jack writes.

You may not agree with everything he spits out in the book, depending on your political/ religious leanings but certainly there are principles here that could guide you if you want to make a career, a successful one after graduation and completion of your one year national service.

Is Stanley Jack a successful person, himself?

You need to take one look into his young life to answer that question yourself.

I have read Good To Go and I was just wowed by the repertoire of knowledge flowing from the young writer, his use of history, religion and politics to make his point and the way he puts his words and sentences together to ensure you do not stop as soon as you start reading his book.

Personally, I will recommend this book to all undergraduates, those currently undergoing national service (NYSC), those immediately out of NYSC as well as job seekers.

Those who aren’t getting fulfilment in their current jobs may need to read this and ask themselves if they are indeed Good To Go.

You can buy Good To Go at Bookville World, No 2 Ezimgbu Link Road, adjacent to Mummy B church, Off Stadium Road, Port Harcourt.

Eight out of a ten people will address Delta Mall as shoprite, just like all sweetening cubes is called Maggi, Noodles known as Indomie, Detergents as Omo.

Often times, the first becomes a household name, but today is not about that, it’s about the kind of people you will always see when you go to the Mall.

Sometimes you see some people and you ask yourself, are these people really in this city and other times you wonder.

Here’s a list of them.

1.   Selfie Takers.

These bunch are the best, because they are there for everything, Shop, hangout, meet anyone and they try to show the spirit of the city, which is happiness.

They have in their arsenal, a retinue of closed friends or toasters, and their desire is to have the mall's beauty, 100% present in the pictures.

I bet 78% of people that has visited the mall can't feign innocence to this claim, but I am in the other 22% (Lolz)
There's a good side to this, First, it helps you relive the memory, Show case the city in a positive light and gives you that feel good or living the life feeling.

Almost all the time, there’d be someone taking pictures.

2.   AC Enjoyers
The air conditioners inside the mall, is amazing. You start feeling it the moment the door automatically opens up.
You see this set of us, (I’ll explain the us later) seating on the chairs inside the mall fiddling with our phones or reading a newspaper, or with a can of coke or water.

Yes, us, i have done it a few times especially when i had things to do within the mall or it's premises, for example during SBX shopping festival.

3.   Bread eaters
I always find it funny, especially when leaving the mall and you see a shopper with a single shoprite bag containing bread and entering keke. I’ll be like “whaaat?” just to buy bread? Bread nor dey where you dey stay?

4.   Friends and Family
Delta Mall, has automatically become the place to sometimes bump into old friends and acquaintances, they catch up, ask questions of old pals and exchange contacts.

You can also find families taking a stroll around the mall or seating around table eating at the food court section, Laughing together and taking photographs.

It's good to see this, Family that stays together in unity, will aid in building the new city.

5.   Love Birds
Yes, Lovers smiling at each other especially at the food court section, Holding hands or walking into the cinema or Rodina bar upstairs.

Did i miss any? Join the conversation.

Majek Fashek, Timi DakoloNigerian reggae music icon Majek Fashek has insisted that singer Timi Dakolo committed copyright infringement for remaking his classic track ‘Send Down The Rain’.

In a video sent to Entertainment News on Channels Television, Majek who is currently in London to complete works on his comeback album accused Dakolo of not getting proper permission from him or his management before embarking on the remake.

Meanwhile, earlier in the year at an award ceremony, Majek Fashek happily performed the song alongside Timi Dakolo and guitarist Kunle Ayo.

In a statement, Dakolo maintained that he would not want to join issues with the music legend publicly but maintained that he had secured permission and actually paid a fee to Majek through his then management company, November Records.

In a separate statement, November Records confirmed Dakolo’s position saying they held the power of negotiation for Majek at the period and that Timi Dakolo completed all agreed terms before sampling the said track.

Marvel has killed off The Hulk's human alter ego Bruce Banner in its latest comic.
The character is seen dying as a result of an arrow to the head from Hawkeye, his Avengers teammate, in the third issue of Civil War II.

Banner has been the Hulk's alter ego since the character's creation in 1962.

However, for the last year, readers have seen Banner medicating himself to keep his anger management issues under control.

During that time, a Korean-American teenage genius named Amadeus Cho has taken over as the new human alter-ego of The Hulk.

Amadeus Cho is seen on the cover of The Totally Awesome Hulk

"This is uncharted territory for us," Marvel's editor in chief Axel Alonso told the New York Daily News.

"Only two things are for certain: It will take a long, long time for our heroes to come to terms with his loss, and the circumstance surrounding his death will leave a huge scar on the superhero community."

In the latest edition of Civil War II, Hawkeye is seen killing his friend on the belief Banner is about to turn into the Hulk and unleash massive death and destruction.

Banner had recently asked him for a mercy killing in the event of any disaster.

Riri Williams was announced as the new Iron Man last week

His death comes a week after Marvel announced Riri Williams, a 15-year-old African-American girl, will become the new Iron Man.

Marvel has previously brought back characters after their apparent death - including Captain America and Spider-Man, who returned within a year of their demise.

It is not yet clear whether Banner could return in a similar way, but Marvel indicated there were no plans for a return.

Picture
Iyanya Onoyom Mbuk, Nigerian entertainer better known as Iyanya, has announced his impending exit from Made Men Music Group (MMG), his record label of over four years.

The 29-year-old Kukere singer, who is a co-owner of the label, made the announcement on Monday morning, through his Instagram page.

“I’ll be launching my new label and new album soon”, Iyanya wrote.

He will be the second artiste to leave the record label after Emma Nyra departed the outfit in 2014.

Iyanya hit the limelight after winning the second edition of MTN Project Fame, a music talent show, in 2008.

The University of Calabar graduate started his music career in the R&B genre where he thrived with Love Truly and Iyanya, popular songs on ‘My Story’, his 2009 album.

Following the underwhelming performance of the aforementioned singles and the lack of commercial acceptability, Iyanya subsequently switched to Afropop.

Kukere, his 2012 single, was a nationwide hit and its accompanying video featured Etighi, a dance style that originated from Calabar.

Iyanya, according to his Instagram bio, is still signed to MMMG who handles his bookings alongside Upfront and Personal Global Management Consultants (UPGMC).

In 2014, Iyanya, Tekno, Baci, Emma Nyra and Selebobo, artistes signed to Triple MG, released a joint album titled ‘The Evolution’.
